Yoga for Children: A way to help them Flourish & Thrive
Wouldn't you like to provide young people with tools to deal with the stresses and anxieties of life?
Nowadays, there are increasing demands and pressure on children and teens. They are exposed to so many experiences, so many stimulants, so many chemicals, so many stresses. Children and teens are affected by life, stress with long day care or school performance, technology and fewer moments of true connection.
What are the statistics?
The statistics here in Ireland, and worldwide are startling, and the numbers are growing each year.
Have you noticed illnesses such as childhood obesity, diabetes, asthma and ADHD are becoming more and more prevalent?
1 in 4 are overweight and obese
1 in 5 children have Asthma
1 in 58 children will have some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
1 in 10 teenagers don't have basic functional movements, that they should have mastered by the age of 6
Children and Teens are dealing with bullying, self-esteem issues or stress and anxiety? There are behavioural issues in nearly every classroom.
1 in 5 children are reported to have mental health issues
Over 9% of school children are self-harming, with 50% of those repeatedly self-harming.
What is the solution?
Yoga is a way to really impact young
people's lives. Yoga is providing kids
and teens with the tools and skills they need to be able to cope with, and
overcome many illnesses and issues that they face every day. Yoga helps to
build and improve the resilience and well-being of children & teens.
Not just any Yoga...
Traditional yoga classes for children have been about either
adjusting adult yoga and teaching it to children, or based on fun and games. But this is no longer good enough or in fact appropriate, look at those statistics again.
I teach yoga for kids from a yoga therapy perspective. This means, that my classes are designed to meet the needs of my students. I work with specific exercises and poses to target issues such as asthma, childhood obesity, postural issues and diabetes. I use breathing techniques designed to help kids feel calm and in control. I use meditation and relaxations to show kids and teens how to rest, how to still their minds and find their own place of relief and peace inside. There is always a personal development exercise in the class, that can look like partner/team work, journaling, conversations about self-worth & values, or how we think and feel. I often educate kids and teens about their bodies and minds, how they work, what they do and what we can do to help our minds and bodies to work better.
Children and teens need to be empowered to find what works for them to feel better in their bodies, minds and spirits.
